Inspire - High potential and gifted education

Some students learn faster and more easily than others. These students may shine in creativity, thinking, leadership or sport.

At our school, we recognise and nurture these strengths early. We support advanced learners with great lessons and activities to help them grow and thrive.

What is high potential and gifted education?

Inspire - High potential and gifted education (HPGE) is how our school supports students with advanced learning needs.

We do this through:

Our high potential and gifted education opportunities

Our students engage with HPGE education in the classroom, in our school, and across NSW.

In our classroom
At St Ives North Public School, we are committed to extending students across all High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE) domains - intellectual, physical, creative, and social-emotional. Our teachers use data-driven, evidence-informed strategies to differentiate learning programs and implement extension activities tailored to individual student needs. Through collaborative teaching, regular assessment, and ongoing professional learning in the HPGE Policy, staff expertly design learning experiences that challenge and stimulate students’ intellectual curiosity and talents. Students engage in targeted extension groups and enrichment tasks that promote growth beyond stage-level expectations, ensuring development across all domains.
Across our school

We foster a culture of high expectations and talent development through coordinated whole-school programs. A dedicated HPGE team, including executive staff, classroom teachers, and specialist staff, leads initiatives to identify and extend gifted learners. Our extension programs include:

  • Physical domain: Employed sports coordinator supports school sport, athletics, and representative competitions ranging from PSSA to zone, area, state, and national levels.
  • Creative domain: A specialist CAPA teacher delivers rich learning experiences during Release From Face-to-Face (RFF) time. Students participate in a variety of performing arts ensembles including choirs (K-2, 3-4, 5-6), dance ensembles, concert bands, string orchestras, Fun with Strings, whole school dance concerts, and the School Spectacular.
  • Social-emotional domain: Students develop leadership and interpersonal skills through lunchtime clubs such as Gardening Club and Kindness Crew, and leadership opportunities including the Student Representative Council (SRC), Kindergarten Playmates, and Buddies programs.
Across NSW
St Ives North Public School actively encourages students to engage in a broad range of state-wide HPGE opportunities that further enrich their talents and interests. Students participate in programs and competitions such as Maths Olympiad, Tournament of the Minds, the NSW Premier’s Spelling Bee, Multicultural Public Speaking Competition, and various external Poetry, Writing, Maths, and Art competitions. Our athletes compete in expanded sporting competitions at zone, area, state, and national levels, while creative and performing arts students have opportunities to showcase their talents in major events like the School Spectacular. These experiences complement our commitment to nurturing diverse talents and helping students excel beyond the classroom.
